Bekal Fort, Kasargod

Wrought like a giant-key hole, Bekal Fort is one of the largest and best preserved forts in Kerala. Encompassed by a spectacular beach, this historical fort offers a panoramic view of the Arabian Sea from its massive towers.

The Lohagarh Fort was able to withstand the repeated attacks from the British forces led by Lord Lake in 1805 when they laid a siege for more than 6 weeks. After losing more than 3000 soldiers, the British forces had to retreat and strike a compromise with the Bharatpur rulers.

Tourist who wishes to visit the fort can commute by means of the local transport available. However, Bharatpur Bird Sanctuary is hogging all the limelight, and therefore; Lohagarh is often dubbed as the lesser visited forts in India.

The fort was established by the king of Ujjain, Maharaja Vikramaditya to commemorate the stay of his brother Raja Bhartihari who had taken his Samadhi in a live stage.

The fort has witnessed the rule of three Mughal Emperors-Babur, Humayun and Akbar before it was passed to the Nawabs of Awadh in the 18th century. One can also find a stone umbrella inside the fort, which was built by King Sahadeo to commemorate his victory over 52 rulers.

Bidar Fort, Karnataka

Situated in Bidar district of Karnataka, Bidar Fort is one of the most popular tourist spots in the state. The structure of this fort exhibits the Persian style of architecture. Several mosques, gardens, arches and palaces were built inside and outside the fort complex.

As per documented facts, the Bidar Fort was built in the 15th century. It came into prominence with the Sultanate regime. The main façade of the Bidar Fort was built by Bahamani Sultan Ahmed Shah Wali in 1429 AD.

Later on, renovations and modifications were carried out by Barid Shahi Sultans. It was lastly conquered by the Mughal King Aurangzeb.

The layout of the fort is in quadrangular shape. Most of the structures of the fort have got ruined with the passage of time, yet the remains are very well conserved.

Some of the popular remains in the fort include Solah Khamba Mosque, Gagan Mahal, Rangin Mahal and Zenana Palace among others. Other highlights of this fort include Lal Bagh, Watch Tower, Takhat Mahal and Deewan-e-Aam.

Tughlaqabad Fort, Delhi

Perched atop of a rocky hill, Tughlaqabad Fort comprises 1/3rd of New Delhi. The ramparts of this fort, now in ruins, are from 10 meter to 15 meter high with bastions and gateways. A visit to this hill fort in Delhi could amount to a memorable day trip with the legends, stories and curse that have been attributed with this place.

It was built to serve a dual purpose, one of providing a defensive structure to the ruler and second to serve as his imposing capital. Although the heritage of New Delhi is quite touristy, you may find a few people visiting Tughlaqabad Fort, and therefore it is often considered as lesser known forts in India.

The fort was built in the early part of the 14th century by Ghias-ud-din Tughlaq. Before Tughlaq had acquired that title, he came to be known as Ghazi Malik and served Sultan Mubarak Khilji.

The idea of constructing this fort came to Ghias ud Din Tughlaq during a conversation with Khilji Tughlaq suggested that his master should build himself a fortress here to which Khilji replied that perhaps one day when Tughlaq becomes Sultan, he should build the fortress himself.

The fort was built with the idea to keep Mongol invaders at bay. Besides, Tughlaq also built a road that came to be known as the GT Road. Today along with the tomb of Ghiyath-ud-Din Tughlaq is one of the top places to visit in Delhi especially if you are looking for a cultural and heritage experience.

The entrance to Tughlaqabad Fort is chargeable. For Adults who are Indian citizens, the cost is Rs. 5. For foreign visitors, the cost of the ticket is around Rs. 100. Entry for children up to 15 years of age is free. You could also take Delhi Metro's Violet Line and alight at Tughlaqabad Metro Station to reach this fort.

Daulatabad Fort, Devagiri

Daulatabad, the fort city in Maharashtra, is located at a distance of 16 kilometers northwest of Aurangabad. It was earlier known as Devgiri. The hill fortress stands on a conical hill, at a height of 200 meters.

Initially it was built as Yadav stronghold, later; it was passed through the hands of several dynasties in the Deccan. The name ‘Daulatabad’ was given by Muhammad Tughlaq, Sultan of Delhi.

When Muhammad Tughlaq ascended the throne of Delhi, he was so besotted by the fort that he decided to move his court and capital there, renaming it Daulatabad (the City of Fortune).

It is one of the world’s best preserved forts, without ever being distorted. This fort is an example of architectural mastery even in those times.

Introduction

Also known as Prabhas Pattan, Deo Pattan or Somnath Pattan, this temple is an excellent example of typical ancient temple architecture of India. It was famed for being a treasure of wealth, which was looted by Muslim rulers from 11th to 18th century. Being one of the 12 Jyotirlingas, it is considered to be one of the popular religious sites of the followers of Hinduism and Lord Shiva.

Renowned as a timeless shrine, it is every year visited by a decent number of devotees from all around the country. If the legends are to be believed, during the ancient times revenue was collected from the nearby 10,000 villages for the maintenance of the Somnath temple.

History of the Somnath Temple

It is believed that originally the Somnath Temple was built by Moon God Soma in gold, by Ravana of epic Ramayana in Silver, in wood by Lord Krishna  and then during the 11th century in stone by Solanki Rajput rulers.

The present structure is 7th reconstruction that was done in the year 1951 by Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel. The riches of this temple invited several invasions but after every invasion, the temple was given back its glory by one or the other Hindu devotee or devotees.

Considered one of the top 10 temples in India, Somnath is erected in the Chalukyan architecture style or Kailash Mahameru Prasad Style with 50 m tall Shikhara, forming a beautiful sight with the view of the Arabian sea and the tip of the Saurashtra peninsula.

This magnificent temple consists of silver doors, a Nandi bull idol, delicate detailed carvings and the main Shivlinga. A huge mandapa or hall and the main temple are placed in the enormous courtyard.

Pin Parvati Valley Trek, Himachal

Bhangarh village, Alwar, Rajasthan

Without a grain of doubt, Bhangarh remains the most haunted place in India. The tales of why this place was cursed, destroyed and abandoned differs but not the fact that after the sunset this place becomes one hell of scary and creepiest places not just in India but the world.

According to one of the 2 narratives regarding Bhangarh being cursed, a black magician named Guru Balu had warned the maharaja Madho Singh that the fort that was being constructed should not rise to that extent where its shadow shall fall on the place where he practiced his magic.

In ignorance, Ajab Singh, son of King Madho Sing raised it to such height that the shadow fell on that forbidden place and thus Bhangarh was cursed and destroyed.

According to yet another legend, it is said that a tantric (practitioner of occult magic) named Singhia was enamored by the ravishing beauty of the princess Ratnavati. He was well aware that princess would not accept his advances so he cast a magical spell on the oil that was to be used by princess in order to seduce her. But the princes herself was adept in magic and foiled the advances of Singhia. Frustrated and enraged, he cursed the town and hence the doom fell on Bhangarh.

So creepy and haunted is this place that it is officially recognized by ASI as one of the haunted places in India. The sign board put up by the Asis at Bhangarh warns the visitors to not enter this haunted fort before the sunrise or after the sunset. Entrance to Bhangarh is legally prohibited after darkness envelops this ghost town.

Brij Raj Bhawan Palace in Kota, Rajasthan

This heritage hotel in Rajasthan was formerly the official residence and palace of the Kota’s royal family. It is reportedly haunted by the ghost of Major Burton and his sons who were killed here during the Sepoy uprising of 1857. The ghost is often sighted after dark in the central hall of the hotel.

The ghost of Mr. Burton never harms or scares the visitors and guest of this palace turned hotel but does give a tight slap to any of the watchmen who are found sleeping during his duty hours. It is belived that the watchmen had not warned the Major in advance when the mutineers arrived at Brij Raj Bhavan and murdered him and his 2 sons.

Dumas Beach, Gujarat

Located 21 km from Surat, Dumas beach is known for its black soiled shore. Traditionally, the dead of the Hindu community living nearby Dumas were cremated here. The popular version goes that this place in Gujarat is haunted by the ghosts of the evill and unsatisfied souls of dead.

A beautiful beach during day, Dumas becomes the hunting ground of malevolent ghosts who warn visitors to return if they venture close to the shore. A widespread belief is that those who don’t heed these warnings and continue towards the shore vanish.

Dogs, who are considered better when it comes to sixth sense and detection of paranormal activity, are said to behave strangely when at Dumas Beach.

Dow Hill, Kurseong

A number of gruesome and mysterious murders in the Dow Hill forest are the reason behind this place being haunted by rancorous souls. It would not be wrong to compare Dow Hill with the Hollywood film ‘Sleepy Hollow’, the only difference is that instead of mysterious headless horseman, a headless boy has been spotted by locals numerous times.

A small township in West Bengal, Dow Hills is famous for some of the best boarding schools in the state but it is also home to accursed forests. One boarding school that falls within its perimeter - The Dow Hill Boarding School for Girls - is at the hub of spooky and scary activities by all accounts.

It’s not just that the surrounding forest is haunted but the ghosts roam free in the corridors as the building has been encroached into their territory. Several headless kids are reportedly spotted in the jungle and visitors are cautioned against venturing on their own in the dense forests of Dow Hills.

The locals who visit the forest have reported seeing a headless ghost who suddenly appears and then disappears into the forests. The forests of Dow Hills have reportedly witnessed countless murders which took place in this forest area.

D’Souza Chawl, Mumbai

Owing to D’Souza Chawl, Mahim has acquired the status of being haunted. It is said that a women, fell into the water, while pulling water, fell to her death in the well. Most people have witnessed the apparition of a ghostly woman near the well.

As the story goes, the elderly women fell into the well as it was without boundaries.  She screamed for help but it wasn’t heard and she drowned. Locals often report the ghost sighting of the old lady during night.

Thankfully the ghost of the lady is not vengeful and people of D’Souza Chawl have never encountered any untoward incident. Ghost hunters frequent the well at the Chawl during night to catch a glimpse of the ghost of old lady.

Delhi Cantt

Delhi has several locations which are believed to be haunted. Also referred to as “the City of Djinns”, Delhi with its medieval structures and densely forested Ridge has its many a places that have their resident djinns and ghosts.

The most common ghost sightings around India include approached by or seeing a lady clad in white sari sometimes referred to as chudails so much so that there’s a popular adage that goes “bargad ki chudail” (witch that resides in banyan tree ). Delhi Cantonment referred to as Delhi Cant. with its dense forest is one such haunted places in Delhi.

It is reported that a lady in white sari approaches the passing vehicles late in the night and asks for hitch from the riders. Now if the riders don’t offer lift and speed away their vehicle are chased by the ghost lady who runs at a speed similar to your car.

Shaniwar Wada, Pune

The full moon nights at Shaniwar Wada  are believed to be very haunted. As per the story, this fort is haunted by the ghost of a 13 year old prince who was brutally assassinated by one of his relative.

The rumors of ghost sightings include mention of four males sitting by the light of a lone candle and drinking alcoholic beverages. Yet another story that does the round is of a young girl in red dress coming out of a house.

Vrindavan Society, Thane

The ghost that haunts this society in Mumbai is reportedly that of a man who lived in the society and committed suicide. On several occasions watchmen on night duty have reported being slapped and the search for the culprit never leads to any person.

Other stories that do the round is the society residents sensing a presence when coming late to their home. Despite being haunted, Vrindavan Society is a reputed and affluent society in Thane district of Mumbai, Maharashtra.
