This woods are where a headless apparition of a boy is occasionally spotted by the local woodcutters |
Yes! Kurseong, located 30 kilometers away is considered to be one of the
most haunted places in India. A number of gruesome and mysterious murders in the Dow Hill forest are considered by locals as the reasons behind this place being haunted by implacable souls. On the stretch that links the Kurseong Dow hill and Forest office, woodcutters and labourers have reported the sighting of a headless boy walking and disappearing in the forest.
But never mind the folklores and urban legends, Kurseong is a picturesque hill town connected to Darjeeling via the Toy Train. Literally meaning “the place of white orchids”, the pastoral setup, scenic beauty and mild weather have attracted artist and poets to this small settlement since bygone era.
Kuresong is said to have inspired the likes of great Rabindranath Tagore and composer Atul Prasad Sen. Sister Nivedita, the famed disciple of Swami Vivekanand made this tranquil place her home and even Mark Twain has paid a visit to this place.

Tamil Nadu
Many would find it unbelievable that Tamil Nadu receives the highest number of foreign tourist footfall in India. Frankly I was surprised while I was doing research for this post. Well but then again how many of us know that some of the must visit and awe inspiring tourist places in India are in Tamil Nadu. Tranquil hill stations, sandy beaches, spectacular temples, verdant tea plantations, churches, museums, “toy train” and what not. You name it and we bet you’ll find it in Tamil Nadu.
Without much argument or fuss, we state top 3 reasond to visit Tamil Nadu: temples, temples and temples.
Surprised…are you?
Now consider this…this state in South India has over 33,000 temples most of whom are over 800-1200 years old. It won’t be an overstatement to state at this point that Tamil Nadu happens to be the cradle of Dravidian Culture.
Meenakshi Amman temple is to South India what Taj Mahal is to North India. 12 gopurams or the sculpture studded chambers filled with statues of gods and demons are a sight to behold. Located in Madurai and built to honor goddess Meenakshi (a form of Parvati), the temple offers a rich insight into the Dravidian Culture.
Then there are UNESCO inscribed World Heritage Sites which includes 3 of the Great Living Chola Temples (Thanjavur, Gangaikonda Cholapuram and Darasuram) and The Group of Monuments in Mahabalipuram (now Mamallapuram) which again are repository of the ancient Dravidian culture.
Classical music, dance forms and other cultural activities in Tamil Nadu form major appeal for tourism in the state.
Then there are some picturesque and serene hill stations which are at their verdant best without much traffic making it perfect for you to enjoy the pastoral beauty of the places. And that also happens to be the reason why we have included Tamil Nadu in our list of top places to visit in India in October.
On top of our hill stations in Tamil Nadu to visit in October list is Ooty. One of the oomph factors that make traveling to Ooty so special is the Nilgiri Mountain Railways or the “toy train.” Some of the must visit hill stations in Tamil Nadu along with Ooty are Kodaikanal, and Yercaud.

One of the best kept secrets on the Indian side of Himalayas and considered India’s Shangri La, Sikkim with its unspoiled alpine forests, quaint hill towns and Tibetan Buddhist culture is a nature-blessed paradise in North East India.
Good news if you are reading this list of top places to visit in India in October is that Sikkim is one of those places.
So first we have something for adventure seekers!
Sikkim, with it’s yet to be explored and pristine trails, is one of the best places for trekking in Indian Himalayas. Whereas the trek from Yuksom to Dzongri Trail is moderate, take up the Goecha La challenge if you consider yourself a hardened trekker.
|
Semeti Lake, Goecha La |
The rewards of undertaking this challenging trekking in Sikkim are numerous. The awesome vistas and later panoramas of rhododendron laden forests, mighty rivers and towering snowcapped mountain peaks of Himalayas conjure a magical sight. Goecha Peak is considered to be the best place - if you are not on top of the actual one - for sighting the third highest mountain peak in the world Mt Khangchendzonga.
The day hikes and short walks truly bring out the natural splendor and rustic charm of this unspoiled Himalayan region to its fore. Take a hike from Rabangla to Mainom which is a one day easy to moderate climb or opt for the Damthang (1650 m) to Tendong (2600 m) hike in South Sikkim.
In the West Sikkim try the easy half day nature walk Hillay (2750 m) to Barsey 3000 m) or embark on the monastic trail from Pemayangtse to Sangacholling Monastery.
